The ‘From crop to cup’ lake Kivu experience combines the stunning scenery of Lake Kivu with an educational excursion where visitors learn about the coffee growing process. Visitors learn in hands-on ways about the entire coffee production chain . This lake Kivu Coffee Experience introduces the coffee growth process ‘from crop to cup’. The tour kicks off on a boat trip to Nyamirundi Island where you will visit the plantation of a local coffee cooperative.
The volcanic soils of the island give the coffee a full bodied, yet non-acidic flavor, and some of the best coffee in the world is grown in this area. The coffee cooperative, Ingoboka, has a total of over 2,000 members, all of whom own small coffee farms on the shores of the lake and its surroundings.
The Southern coffe tour is conducted in Butare- which makes it an easy day trip from either Kigali or Nyungwe Forest Visitors learn in hands-on ways about the entire coffee production chain . Ideally situated, the coffee plantation is a two hour drive [133KM] from the capital city of Kigali and A 20 minute drive from the city of Huye. In spite of the close proximity to the city, we are located high in the serene mountains away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
These coffee excursions introduce you to the washing process that involves over 20 sophisticated steps. You pick your own coffee cherries and follow through the various steps of coffee washing. Finally, you can roast your own coffee on an open fire and have a personal coffee tasting experience of hand-grinded and traditionally roasted coffee.
